FUNCTION

The City of Charlotte, Charlotte Water Department is currently accepting applications for the Facilities Management Assistant Apprentice position.  

The individual will work under the supervision of the Charlotte Water Maintenance Division. 

SUMMARY

This is a full- time two (2) year position to prepare the apprentice to be a Facilities (Management Assistant) Coordinator.  Upon completing the apprenticeship program, the apprentice will receive a nationally recognized department of labor journeymen credential, secure a full-time position with the City of Charlotte - Charlotte Water as a Facilities (Management Assistant) Coordinator, and be eligible for retirement benefits after five years of full-time employment.

MAJOR DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

• High School Diploma or GED
• Basic computer and mobile device literacy; familiarity with Microsoft Office programs
• Valid North Carolina Driver's License

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES


Applicants for this position will learn to perform the following tasks:
• Respond to facility service requests and maintain work order system notes
• Conduct regular site condition and service vendor inspections for work performance, safety, security, and sustainability
• Provide approved physical site access for service vendors
• Perform basic financial workflow tasks in Munis (e.g., requisitions, change orders, receiving, etc.)
• Familiarity with Microsoft Office programs, including MS Outlook.
• Assist with data collection and maintenance for hard and soft asset inventory management
• Support Facilities Management staff in various other initiatives (e.g., key system management, space occupancy, staff relocations, etc.)
• Administration (work schedules, assets, projects, contracts, finance, sustainability, space occupancy, relocations, standards, soft service vendors, etc.)
• Maintenance (ensuring all physical elements of the built environment are operated and maintained appropriately; may require some minor hands-on work but primarily involves supervising third-party vendor work in preventive maintenance and task orders)

Physical Requirements:
The physical demands of this position are variable and involve both sitting and standing/walking for extended periods.  The position frequently lifts and moves up to 20 pounds and occasionally lifts and moves up to 50 pounds.  Loads over 50 pounds are rarely encountered and are addressed with either equipment or other staff assistance.  Additionally, the following physical abilities are required: balancing, climbing, crawling, crouching, feeling, manual dexterity, grasping, handling, perceiving sounds at normal speaking levels, distinguishing among sounds, kneeling, mental acuity, pulling, pushing, reaching, repetitive motion, speaking, stooping, talking, and visual acuity in data/color/observations/equipment/inspections.

Work Environment:
Work is performed in various work environments, including commercial office spaces, mechanical equipment rooms, laboratories, warehouses, and outside.  Work may be performed around chemicals, solvents, dust, mold, in low lighting, or with low or irregular physical clearances.  Appropriate personal protective equipment is required.  Work typically occurs during regular business hours.  Occasional early morning, evening, and weekend emergency responses may be required.

CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT

The City's Background Check Policy requires background checks to be conducted on final internal or external candidate(s) applying for any position with the City of Charlotte. The type of information that will be collected as part of a background check includes, but is not limited to: reference checks, social security verification, education verification, criminal conviction record check, and, if applicable, a credit history check, sex offender registry and motor vehicle records check.

Background checks must be in compliance with all federal and state statutes, such as the Fair Credit Reporting Act (FCRA). The checks must be consistent with the guidelines set forth by these laws requiring organizations to obtain a candidate's written authorization before obtaining a criminal background report, motor vehicle records check or credit report; and to properly store and dispose of information derived from such reports.

Final candidates must pass a pre-employment drug-screening test and physical examination. During the selection process, candidates may be asked to take a skills test, and/or participate in other assessments.
